The Mayweather and Marquez fight is on, and Las Vegas is gonna be alive in July when the bell rings. There are critics who say that Mayweather’s recent two years of inactivity will leave him sorely open to attack. There are others who claim that Marquez was hand-picked by the Mayweather camp as a dead certainty for a comeback victory for their Pretty Boy. But after his recent electric interview with Brian Kenny, Floyd was adamant that this fight was no mismatch, and that he had total respect for his opponent. At the end of the day, Marquez is not a pushover, and anyone who saw his performances against Pacquiao will agree that the Mexican stamina-fiend was cheated of at least one victory. Marquez’s recent hammering of Juan Diaz convinced me that this guy is not onyl a technical match for Mayweather but that he is as fit as he’s ever been. This bout will be an intellectual challenge, as well as a physical one, and Mayweather knows that both he and Marquez have both qualities. If you saw the barrage that Diaz hit Marquez with in that last fight, you’ll know that the Mexican can take a punch. If you saw Marquez’s answer to Diaz’s best shots, then you know that Floyd will need to be both guarded and mobile for this one. Mayweather has a definite size advantage, but Marquez and his trainer Nacho Beristain are said to be working on a strategy of counterpunching. Marquez recently stated, “This battle will simultaneously be about aggression and strategy. I can either lead if he runs or box if he stands with me. Either way, it will take intelligence, speed, and technique to win this fight.”
Mayweather answered by saying, “I beat fighters mentally. And once I beat them mentally, I beat them physically so they’re never the same. Look at what happened to DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley, how many losses he had after that fight, look at what happened to Zab Judah, Angel Manfredy, Diego Corrales, may he rest in peace. Look at what happened to De La Hoya, even in the Stevie Forbes fight, he wasn’t the same. Marquez is a warrior, but when I look at him, I see a lot of scar tissue.”
Mayweather will be pushing his luck if he thinks Marquez is an attack-minded fighter who leaves himself open, though. Marquez is more like a patient predator, who possesses an uncanny ability to guage where his opponents’ energy levels are at. He has timing and sensitivity, and knows when to launch his bid, and oh, boy, does Juan Diaz know all about that!
