Floyd Mayweather Jr. unleashed a scathing verbal attack on Manny Pacquiao’s reputation this week, when he declared the Filipino fighter was “overrated” and that the media had played up Pac-Man’s abilities. Mayweather’s last bout, against England’s Ricky Hatton, was dubbed “Undefeated”, and it was the American fighter (39-0, with 25 Knockouts) who emerged from that scrap with his reputation intact. Hatton, on the other hand, was beaten fair and square. After Pacquiao’s recent demolition job on the Hitman, the press have clamored to report on Pacquiao’s strength and ability. Mayweather is tiring of the media love-affair.
“They forget that when I fought de la Hoya, I was in my 30s and he was in his 30s, but when I beat him—they say he was over the hill, but all of a sudden, when Pacquiao fights him, they say ‘Oh man, we can’t believe what just happened.’ Ya’ll just said he was over the hill, which one is it?”, Mayweather asked BoxingScene.com’s Mark Vester.
Mayweather also remarked on his 10th round defeat of Ricky Hatton in December 2007. Mayweather tickets sold handsomely for that fight, as they are doing now for the upcoming fight with Marquez. The “Battle of East and West” between Pacman and Hitman also sold tons of boxing tickets, but Mayweather is confident that most people would rate him higher than Pacquiao, if only the media wouldn’t insist on forcing their favorite onto the public. Manny Pacquiao smashed Hatton in the second round, but Mayweather insists that this means nothing when comparing Pacman to himself, despite the media taking it as a measure of Pacquiao’s superiority.
“I beat Ricky Hatton two years ago when he was an undefeated fighter and I dominated. He was finished after that. He was already finished before the fight with Manny Pacquiao, but Pacquiao beats him and you say he’s the best,” Floyd pointed out. He also stated that Pacquioa’s victory wouldn’t have been so resounding if Hatton had taken the advice of his trainer, Floyd Mayweather Senior.
“He didn’t listen to my father in the corner. If he did, it would have been a different fight,” Floyd Jr. said. Floyd Mayweather, Sr. trained Hatton for what was dubbed the “Battle of East and West” but it all came to nought when Hatton’s style was expertly analyzed and taken apart by the Pacquiao camp.
All this fighting talk comes ahead of the Mayweather Marquez bout in July at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and only then will we know how good Mayweather still is. The problem for Floyd Jr. is that he is in a lose-lose situation; if he destroys an in-form Marquez, everyone will say Marquez was an easy touch for a comeback fight. If he is beaten by Marquez, people will know that Floyd really did go out on a limb, but his comeback bid will be in tatters. One thing’s for sure, those Mayweather v. Marquez tickets are gonna be worth serious money once the bell rings on July 18 and two of the best fighters in the world meet in the middle of the ring…

Hell, Floyd is STILL the best in the world and no amount of press hijacking is going change that fact. His game is all about staying ahead and lets see pacman and his traitors do the same to mayweather that they did to Hatton!!
Maywether will hurt this Marquez and then he will go on to hurt Pacquao even more, mark my words. Nobody can carry a boxing fight like pretty boy floyd, no-one nowhere nobody!!
I will be there and I will be back after the fight to give you my verdict on the fight.
Mayweather and Pacquiao is the biggie and nobody in their right mind would try to call it. Marquez uis a good fighter though so don’t write him off, man. He will be strong and if he can overcome the weight and size advantage he might pull off a miracle. Boxing always has its surprises, and if you have the money for PPV or live action who cares who wins as long as it is a good fight?
Come on let’s just see how this goes and then hopefully it will be floyd v. pacman in the fight of the 21st century.
