There are people who think that this fight is a foregone conclusion – like some of the guys who’ve left comments on this website. Those people are not real boxing fans, they don’t feel the sharp anticipation in the air and the uncertainty that top-level boxing brings. The more people choose to watch this on Pay-Per-View, the better, because Mayweather v Marquez fight tickets are not gonna be easy to find come July 18, when they’re packing into the MGM Grand, to see if Mayweather can still do the trick after an absence from the ring. There will be boxing fans there simply baying for blood, and others just massively curious to see if Marquez can outfox the powerful Mayweather. Floyd claims that he has been working out some new moves while he’s been away from the fight game, including a new approach to the modern body-jabbing that has become so commonplace. Mayweather is quick to regain his arrogance of old, when he says “I am boxing”, but one man refuses to believe that, and that man is Juan Manuel Marquez.

“He seems like a nice guy, but every once in a while, his ego comes out,” Marquez observed recently. “I’ve always said that where there’s no risk, there’s no reward, so when Golden Boy asked me ‘Juan, do you want to fight Floyd?’ I immediately said ‘yes, let’s do it, no problem.’ I don’t like easy fights, and this means too much for my career and my life for me to turn it down. I don’t like to talk much outside the ring; I’d rather talk in the ring with my fists. I always prepare myself for victory – he’s not a machine, he’s a human being and we’re coming to win on July 18th.”

Marquez is set to be proper fireworks. 2009 has proved to be an interesting year for boxing, with some fights’ hyperbole far outweighing the fights themselves, but we have seen some scorchers, and Marquez has certainly featured. This week, British boxer Amir Khan announced ahead of his bout with Andreas Kotelnik that he wanted to take on Hatton, Pacquiao and Mayweather – not simultaneously, we hope! The stage is now set for even more fun and games. Khan might stand a chance against Hatton, yes, but Mayweather and Pacquiao, both would eat Khan alive. Khan v. Kotelnik tickets are selling well, and Amir’s sensational statement probably hasn’t hurt that. But back to reality: Whoever wins this epic Marquez-Mayweather bout is surely gonna fight Manny Pacquiao, and that, my friends, is gonna be Roman candles all night long!
