So, it happened like they said it would, but Marquez gave his all, and that’s why people love him. This fight was electric, though, with Mayweather desperate to avoid Marquez’s lethal blows by keeping his left shoulder raised and indeed rapidly withdrawing from the fray when Marquez looked to be weighing up a big one. That said, Floyd was amazing, as ever. He stood before the Mexican with his arms down throughout the fight, mocked him with funny faces, and basically ground his down with some serious left hooks and relentless jabs that were both persistent and powerful. The following weekend saw Latino hero Chris Arreola take on Vitali Klitschko, with Arreola’s corner throwing in the towel, against the wishes of Arreola. Klitschko tickets have always sold well, for both of the Klitschko brothers, and this one was a telling rampage from the Ukrainian powerhouse.
Next up is the most-awaited of the year, the Cotto v. Pacquiao fight that threatens to blow all the rest away in 2009. Pacquiao must already have set his sights on a Mayweather date, but Cotto will be looking to stop him and be in the frame himself. Cotto Pacquiao is the one they’re all waiting for now, so make sure you have your Cotto Pacquiao tickets in hand in time. When Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather steps back into the ring in a couple of weeks, the speculation over whether he is giving himself an easy ride will be settled once and for all. Another factor that tells us something about the significance – or perceived significance – of this bout is the price of Mayweather v. Marquez tickets; when compared to the upcoming Cotto-Pacquiao tickets, there is a distinct price difference. Mayweather v. Marquez tickets, though a hugely anticipated bout, seems not to be currently selling as fast as Cotto v. Pacquiao tickets. This is most likely due to the fact that the Mayweather Marquez bout was postponed; the pressure to buy boxing tickets was relieved slightly, but it looks like a lot of boxing fans might be disappointed if they leave it to long.
Golden Boy Promotions have referred to the face-off as “the biggest fight of this year”, but the Cotto people might have something to say about that. Cotto-Pacquiao ticket sales for their November 14 fight at same venue look somewhat more vigorous and many are saying that this reflects the greater importance of the Cotto fight. Tickets for Pacquiao vs. Cotto fight have been on public sale since August 17, 2009, and have been selling like crazy in the run-in to the big one at the MGM Grand. The entire arena was declared sold out by promoter Bob Arum within a few hours; advance bulk orders placed by the Vegas casino operators meant that the general public experienced severely diminished numbers of tickets being available. Mayweather’s nickname, “Money” Mayweather, looks to be threatened ahead of their fight, but many of those in the know are laughing – they know it was the postponement that caused the lull in Mayweather tickets sales, and they warn that a last minute tickets stampede will mean peoples’ complacency could be their worst enemy. There are more arguments about the ticket prices. Mayweather v. Marquez tickets are currently going for around $4,500 to $5,000. Cotto v. Pacquiao tickets are currently avaliable at around $10,000. Skeptics claim that this further proves the greater importance of the Cotto bout, but there’s another way to see it; if indeed the Cotto Pacquiao fight was sold out because of casino operators buying up blocks of tickets, then Cotto tickets will be scarcer and anyone knows that this will drive up their price. If the Mayweather Marquez tickets have suffered a lull in sales due to the injury to Mayweather, then more Mayweather tickets being available means ticket prices themselves will be down. These two fights have been drawn into a strange competition, which is only a part of a larger situation that involves UFC 103 tickets; the Mayweather Marquez fight will be staged at the exact same time as UFC 103 in Dallas, Texas. The two events have been subject to a crazy wrangle that means the TV networks are now fighting over who will draw the most viewers for the spectacles. At the same time, the Mayweather Marquez tickets sales and the UFC 103 tickets sales might be affected by the coincidence. Such is life….such is the fight game…
