A novel contest between boxing and UFC fighting has sprung up ahead of the much-anticipated bout between Mayweather and Marquez. The Mayweather Marquez boxing fight will happen on the same Saturday night as UFC 103: Franklin v. Belfort, at the same time. This has got the TV companies in quite a state! No-one saw it coming, but competition for viewership between UFC 103 and the Golden Boys Promoted main event between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Marquez is set to heat up the airwaves. The two sets of promoters have now been plunged into a face-off as they fight to convince fight fans to watch their show instead of the other guys. It’s hard to believe anyone would ever put UFC above boxing, but that’s just my (heavily biased) opinion. What would you buy, Mayweather Marquez tickets or UFC 103 tickets? Spike TV have now announced that they will be screening an hour (8 fights) of the UFC 103 undercard commercial free prior to the pay per view portion of the event kicking in. In response, Golden Boy has sanctioned the Mayweather-Marquez card to be screened in 170 movie theatres across the country.
The press release reads as follows:
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Fathom [Events] into the Golden Boy family of sponsors as their interest in the Mayweather vs. Marquez mega-fight is another indication of the sheer magnitude of the fight itself,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Having the fight in high definition in movie theaters throughout the country is unprecedented and gives boxing fans another outlet to watch the compelling action of a big-time fight.”
Not since the golden era of the early 80s has there been a boxing fight screened live in movie theaters. The 1980 bout between “Sugar” Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran was the last one, and it received massive attention. This is all so much words, though, if you are a true boxing fan and you really want to be in Vegas for Mexican Independence Day, when Mexican Marquez takes on American Mayweather. The entire city will be consumed by the fight and its significance, and to actually have Mayweather tickets for the Marquez fight will be a dream come true for some, but not for all. After all, a night at the movies costs almost as much as the real thing, so why accept substitutes? It’s gonna get very interesting as the night of the two big fights draws near; both of these fight cards are very impressive, but for me there’s only one winner: Mayweather v. Marquez. The reason? The winner gets to fight Manny Pacquiao – and let’s not forget that Cotto v. Pacquiao tickets are also selling well right now. Gee, the world’s a great place when there are some killer fights on the horizon, huh?

So, you’ve got your Mayweather tickets and you’ve booked the hotel room in Vegas. The question now remains: Who’s gonna win? Some say Mayweather, some say Marquez, but one thing’s for sure: It’s gonna be one heck of a fight, and could well go the distance. Mayweather owns the most rapid fists in the fight game, but Marquez has the most accurate. Mayweather has the moves, the power and the big single punch to knock people out, even good boxers and clever old dogs like Marquez. But Marquez is not without movement – in his case the movement of an intelligent fighter who anticipates his opponent’s game-plan on the fly and then effectively sticks a spanner in the works with devastating effect. Mayweather is not without his own skills in that department though; blessed with raw strength and a sinuous upper body flexibility, Mayweather is able to pull off the most amazing dodges while sizing up his foe’s weak spots and degree of tiredness. He seems to actually gain energy as the fight goes on, and this is a nightmare for tiring opponents. When you buy tickets to Mayweather Marquez, you buy tickets to the unknown. That’s why Mayweather v. Marquez tickets are selling so fast now. Just like those Pacquiao v. Cotto tickets everyone’s talking about, this fight is really an open question mark, and both sides are well represented.
Some are saying that Mayweather is suffering from “ring rust”, even more so now the fight has been postponed. It will be almost two years since he fought a real fight when he finally goes up against the mighty Mexican, and Marquez, wily fox that he is, will use this for all it’s worth against him, switching his own game plan and upping the energy level at unexpected moments, for which he is famous. One thing is for sure; Marquez better have some serious intent behind those blows, because Mayweather’s “Pretty Boy” nickname is nothing to do with his willingness to stand up and take a punch. He can roll with the dangerous swingers, tuck his chin down deep to avoid the jabs and uppercuts, and all the while those eyes and that brain never stop working. Marquez knows all this and more, of course, but whether this will help him as the fight goes on is anybody’s guess right now. I just wanna grab my Mayweather v. Marquez tickets and be there when the bell goes and these top dogs step up!
Marquez is also the master of the counter punch. he can hurt with both hands, as Juan Diaz discovered to his surprise at the end of their fight earlier this year. Diaz was knocked out by a vicious Marquez combo, a trademark series of disorienting smashes that saw him on the canvass before he even knew he was there. Marquez is confident of a victory in Vegas, but Mayweather will not hear of it. And then there are the critics, those who insist that this is a mere stop-gap for Mayweather before he finally gets the big one against Pacman. Then there are those who think it will be quite another story; a showdown not between Mayweather and Pacman but between Marquez and Pacquiao. Either way, it will be a hell of a thing. Marquez seems like the underdog, but there are a few variables in his favor. One is the rib injury sustained by Mayweather that caused this fight to be postponed. A rib injury can be a recurring thing if not allowed time to heal, and only nature will show us if this fight has been re-scheduled correctly. Another is the fact that the two fight on Mexican Independence Day; Vegas will be packed with Marquez’ fellow countrymen, and they’ll all be wanting their boy to get a piece of the Pretty Boy. Add it all up and you will see that this fight really is a trip into the unknown. Marquez is no underdog, and Mayweather is probably aware of that. Grab your Marquez Mayweather tickets and watch a night of boxing you will quite simply never forget.

I’m a huge fan of Pacquiao – I’m the first to admit – but there’s something about Cotto that intrigues me. Cotto v. Pacquiao tickets are selling fast largely due to the respect Cotto commands. The guy seems to have been around forever, smashing people up in the ring, that you simply have to respect him. And he looks the part, too, just like Pacquiao. I cannot wait to see who comes out on top when these two hit the ring and start in on each other. Even without a title to fight for, this fight is between two of boxing’s most unpredictable fighters. When Pacman battered De La Hoya nobody expected it, but he came out and simply destroyed a boxer everyone at least suspected had half a chance of winning. The phenomenal Filipino won’t be taking this one lying down, that’s for sure. But neither will Cotto, which is why it is so eagerly anticipated. It would be nice to be alive to see anyone take his seventh weight class title, but Pacquiao deserves it more than most. Like any true athlete, you know that Cotto will be trying to prevent that from happening with every fiber of his being here, and Vegas is the place to be come November 14. Cotto-Pacquiao fight tickets are everyone’s dream, definitely mine, and who would ever turn down the chance to be ringside at the MGM Grand for this one?
Promoter Bob Arum, who has both boxers in his Top Rank stable, has insisted the decision to go ahead with this fight has always been “up to the fighters”. Arum certainly won’t be losing any sleep over the prospect of two of his boys going toe-to-toe,especially one that has generated so much interest and seems to have no anticipated outcome. Pacman is still the undisputed top pound-for-pound boxer in the world, but Cotto doesn’t seem to have any regard for that. Trainer Roach is now concerned wth ensuring Pacquiao keeps out of Cotto’s long reach and iron hands. Many have said Pacman lacks the “sand” to stand up to a real punch from Cotto, but with his speed and explosive combos, it is hoped Pacquiao will produce the goods and land one on Cotto that puts him out of action. It’s a tough one to call, but I will be surprised if this happens. After all, wasn’t Cotto one of the people who openly criticized the decision to go ahead with the De La Hoya v. Pacquiao fight? On what grounds, you might well ask: On the grounds that Pacman wasn’t big enough, that he lacked the chin to deal with De La Hoya’s superior weight. That claim now looks laughable, following Pacman’s clinical and animal destruction of De La Hoya. Is Cotto worried that such a turnaround might happen to him, too? Freddie Roach says that Pacquiao doesn’t just have the chin, but that Pacman will run rings round Cotto, so long as he can stay out of the way of the big punches Cotto is known to be capable of.
“Manny has a really good chin because he has a big heart. Of course Cotto’s power is a major concern for me but I really think that we will have no problems. I’m training Manny not to get hit,” Roach recently said. “Manny has always wanted to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr,” Roach added. “The Mayweather fight got delayed because of injury and Manny needed a fight around year’s end. After watching the [Cotto-Clottey] fight Manny told (Bob) Arum that he could beat Cotto,” said Roach.
Roach has been spending his days studying Cotto’s style, just as he so effectively did before the Hatton fight. The Bostonian Roach knows that his fighter’s speed is a valuable weapon against Cotto, and he has been keeping his eye on Cotto’s previous success against similarly fast opponents. “I have already watched several hours of Cotto’s fights. I have been concentrating on how well he did against Shane Mosley. How he neutralized Shane’s speed. Yes, we will have a great game plan for Cotto,” Roach revealed.
Cotto is probably taking all this in stride. The Puerto Rican is made of the right stuff, and that is why Cotto v. Pacquiao tickets are selling so well. Cotto versus Pacquiao, folks, it is being billed as a bigger, more interesting (and obviously more consequential) bout than the Mayweather-Marquez one. Who do you think will come out on top in this, the biggest bout in a big boxing year? Write in and let me know.

The big news this week is that the year of great boxing just got greater; Pacquiao v. Cotto tickets are now on sale, and the boxing public are snapping them up. There’s a limited number of tickets available for this fight, with many already being spoken for by boxing officionados and Top Rank customers. Pacquiao versus Cotto was always going to represent the very pinnacle of boxing at this weight, and the way the tickets are moving is a testament to that.
Pacquiao is the reigning junior welterweight champ following his under two round knockout of Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas last May. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach – himself an ex-boxer who well understands the grueling demands of the sport – covets the title Cotto holds for one very good reason: A win would mean Pacquiao had then held world titles in a record seven weight divisions: Welterweight, junior welterweight, lightweight, junior lightweight, featherweight, junior featherweight and flyweight. That is one heck of an achievement in today’s tough boxing jungle.
Cotto is known to be hesitant to offer the title for grabs, being under his weight class’s limit of 147 pounds. If Cotto was heavier than the welterweight max limit, the fight would be fought as a non-title fight, and the whole Cotto v. Pacquiao tickets rush would not be as fevered. But this is the real deal and these two terrors are ready to go tooth and claw to prove who’s the boss. Cotto should not let the nonsense with the belt interfere with his preparation for this fight with Pacman, that is for sure. He mustn’t listen to the nay-sayers and those who insist he simply gives up the belt. If Cotto really decides to fight – to defend the title – Pacquiao will have all the pressure on him, because in essence he will be the one who is losing it. It’s there, dangling like a fat worm on a hook, and either fighter has the skill and power to make it their own. That’s why this fight is such a good one, and why Pacquiao Cotto tickets are selling up a storm. Many are now saying that the Cotto v. Pacman fight is the fight of the year, even more so than the Mayweather Marquez fight. I might be tempted to agree, but Mayweather Marquez is also looking very tasty.
