Floyd Mayweather Jr spoke out today of his fear that newly-defeated English boxer Ricky Hatton has been irreversibly altered by his two knockout defeats against himself and Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather, who is selling vast numbers of Mayweather Marquez tickets, advised that the Hitman should retire immediately if he is to salvage anything of the person he once was.

Mayweather inflicted Hatton’s first ever loss two years ago at the MGM Grand, when he launched an unstoppable assault on Hatton, knocking him out of the game in Round 10. Pacquiao completely obliterated Hatton – much to shock of his traveling army of English fans in Vegas – in less than two rounds on May 2, 2009. In this year of superlative boxing, it would be an insult to boxing tickets buyers for a man like Hatton to continue, according to Pretty Boy Floyd. Mayweather says these two devastating losses cannot be surmounted and that the only sensible thing to do now would be for Hatton to retire.

Mayweather fights Juan Manuel Marquez in Vegas on July 18, and, despite claims that he hand-picked an easy fight, Mayweather insists Marquez is a tough customer, and the fight will be a scorcher. Of Hatton, though, he has a different opinion.

“Ricky’s career was over in 2007 when he met me,” Mayweather said. “He was a gutsy, tough champ but there’s a time in every boxer’s career when they must hang it up. He was knocked out bad twice – by me and Pacquiao. They were two devastating defeats. He’s been in a lot of tough fights and taken some big shots. I don’t think Ricky should fight again. I wouldn’t fight him, even at Wembley. It would be like picking on a guy that we call ‘gun-shot’.”

Mayweather claims that Marquez is underrated and could – indeed should – have beaten Pacquiao in their two fights, one of which was a draw and the other a controversial split decision which saw Pacquiao adjudged to be the victor. Mayweather compared his own rise through the weight classes to Marquez’s, and said Marquez was no pushover.

“I believe Marquez beat Manny twice. Marquez is a warrior and a great champion,” said Mayweather. It’s not a weight thing. Everybody’s forgetting where I came from – I started a lot lower than 143.”
