When Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather steps back into the ring in a couple of weeks, the speculation over whether he is giving himself an easy ride will be settled once and for all. Another factor that tells us something about the significance – or perceived significance – of this bout is the price of Mayweather v. Marquez tickets; when compared to the upcoming Cotto-Pacquiao tickets, there is a distinct price difference. Mayweather v. Golden Boy Promotions have referred to the face-off as “the biggest fight of this year”, but the Cotto people might have something to say about that. Cotto-Pacquiao ticket sales for their November 14 fight at same venue look somewhat more vigorous and many are saying that this reflects the greater importance of the Cotto fight. Tickets for Pacquiao vs. Cotto fight have been on public sale since August 17, 2009, and have been selling like crazy in the run-in to the big one at the MGM Grand. The entire arena was declared sold out by promoter Bob Arum within a few hours; advance bulk orders placed by the Vegas casino operators meant that the general public experienced severely diminished numbers of tickets being available. Mayweather’s nickname, “Money” Mayweather, looks to be threatened ahead of their fight, but many of those in the know are laughing – they know it was the postponement that caused the lull in Mayweather tickets sales, and they warn that a last minute tickets stampede will mean peoples’ complacency could be their worst enemy. There are more arguments about the ticket prices. Mayweather v. Marquez tickets are currently going for around $4,500 to $5,000. Cotto v. Pacquiao tickets are currently avaliable at around $10,000. Skeptics claim that this further proves the greater importance of the Cotto bout, but there’s another way to see it; if indeed the Cotto Pacquiao fight was sold out because of casino operators buying up blocks of tickets, then Cotto tickets will be scarcer and anyone knows that this will drive up their price. If the Mayweather Marquez tickets have suffered a lull in sales due to the injury to Mayweather, then more Mayweather tickets being available means ticket prices themselves will be down. These two fights have been drawn into a strange competition, which is only a part of a larger situation that involves UFC 103 tickets; the Mayweather Marquez fight will be staged at the exact same time as UFC 103 in Dallas, Texas. The two events have been subject to a crazy wrangle that means the TV networks are now fighting over who will draw the most viewers for the spectacles. At the same time, the Mayweather Marquez tickets sales and the UFC 103 tickets sales might be affected by the coincidence. Such is life….such is the fight game…
